I noted a mention of the HiDES project in a mailing recently. It's run
by Dr Frank Colson, whose e-mail address is HII007@uk.ac.soton.ibm. He
will I am sure be happy to provide info to all interested. HiDES stands

for Historical Document Expert System, and that's essentially what it is.

You might try the extract.exe program available from the Library of
Congress (ftp 140.147.3.12 /pub/vatican.exhibit). This is a menu-driven
unzipper that even creates a subdirectory below the zipped file for the
unzipped files. I haven't experimented with the limitations you mention
but it should work. If it doesn't work for your colleague, it's worth
having for yourself.
