Information Systems Specialist: Systems Programmer III
Center for Electronic Texts in the Humanities (CETH)

Provides software, systems and network administration support for
the Center's main computing projects. Consults with CETH staff on
developing, testing, maintaining and documenting text-based software
projects as well as evaluating future needs. Provides software
support for WWW access to a database of information about
humanities computing projects. Monitors and evaluates new
developments in client/server and UNIX-based information systems
environments.

Requires a bachelor's degree in computer sciences or related field,
or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience. Also
requires approximately two years of experience working with information
management systems and administering at least one PC or UNIX-based
network. Knowledge of Perl, C and UNIX utilities required. A master's
degree in information systems is desirable, as well as knowledge of
client/server architecture, problems related to humanities computing
and one or more of the following: Z39.50, SGML, WAIS, RDBMS, GLIMPS
and CGI.

The Center for Electronic Texts in the Humanities (CETH) was established
by Rutgers and Princeton Universities in 1991. CETH acts as a national
focus for humanities computing within the US and is currently
supported in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities and
the Andrew W Mellon Foundation. CETH's activities include evaluation
of SGML-based software, WWW-based information services for computing
in the humanities, research on metadata issues for the humanities and
an international summer seminar on Methods and Tools for Electronic
Texts in the Humanities. A consortium of member institutions is being
established.
