Subject: Re: 9.525 H-NET?

I have just read Willard's querie re: H-Net and I have a random thought
or two. I don't prtend that this is at all well worked out, just off the
cuff thoughts.

The H- galaxy of distribution lists, recently aggregated at the H-Net
website, provide a conventient central source for humanities on the
Internet. It may (I stress the problematic "may") provide us (the
Humanists on the Internet) provide a more powerful collective advocate's
voice than Humanist's alone as the inevitable commericalizing of the Net
and the simultaneous marginalizing of our kind of effort makes the
allocation of Net resources a hot issue. Being under the H-Net
umbrella does impose some limitations I assume. I noticed that when
a new list was proposed with the H-Albion universe, there was a procedure
for sending it along to the H-Net Board of Directors (or some such name)
for their approval.

In conclusion: if there is an advantage to being a presence on H-Net, to
being the only (?) distribution list or discussion group that takes
Humanities and computing at large as its brief, that advantage would have
to be weighed against a careful assessment of the limitations and
restrictions imposed by the H-Net polity. We should know more
details about what these might be before we decide on any next step.
