Oxford Text Archive - Humanities Computing Unit
Following selection of the Oxford Text Archive as Service Provider for
Electronic Textual Resources by the nationally-funded Arts and
Humanities Data Service, we are now trying to fill a number of
exciting new jobs. We're looking for energetic and enthusiastic
electronic text specialists with a range of skills. TEI-hackers,
corpus-lovers, UNIX-fiends, SGML-junkies, and computing
humanists of all flavours are particularly welcome. If you like
working in a research support environment, and think you have
something to contribute to our work, we'd like to hear from you.
The jobs currently on offer include:
- Head of Oxford Text Archive [up to GBP 26,340]: a senior managerial post
responsible for the future development of the OTA
- Computing Officer [up to GBP 18,294] : a software development post
responsible for enhancing our online services
- Resource Development Officer [up to GBP 18,294] : a joint appointment
with the University English faculty, responsible for promoting use of
digital resources (in particular the British National Corpus)

JOB OPPORTUNITIES AT THE ARTS AND HUMANITIES DATA
SERVICE (AHDS)
THREE HUMANITIES COMPUTING PROFESSIONALS
The Arts and Humanities Data Service is a new
national service funded by the Joint Information
Systems Committee (JISC) of the UK's Higher
Education Funding. Its mission is to co-ordinate
access to and facilitate the creation and use of
electronic resources in the arts and humanities by
offering a range of services to the UK's higher
educational institutions and their members, and by
brokering collaboration amongst agencies in the UK
and abroad which supply relevant networked
information, services, and systems.
The Executive, based at King's College London,
currently seeks to fill three posts.
User Support Development Officer: (Ref E4/QL/2/96)
Your advanced degree in a humanities discipline and
your extensive knowledge of methods and techniques
appropriate to computer-based teaching and research
within the humanities will enable you to develop and
co-ordinate the Service's user-support functions
(e.g. publishing Guides to Good Practice, offering
training days and workshops), ensure its
responsiveness to academic needs (e.g. with regard
to cataloguing standards and data collection
policies), and promote its standards within the user
community. At the same time, your established
reputation within the field of humanities computing
will enable you to broker collaboration amongst
cognate agencies acting in a similar capacity in the
UK and abroad.
Collections and Standards Development Officer: (Ref
E4/QL/3/96) Your advanced degree in a humanities
discipline, substantial experience in developing and
applying relevant computing standards, and
established reputation in humanities computing will
enable you to liaise closely with national and
international initiatives to co-ordinate the
development of the Service's data collection and
preservation policies, its relations with other
resource providers, and its selection and
implementation of essential standards (e.g. with
regard to data encoding, description, and
preservation). You will also co-ordinate the
production of an AHDS Standards Reference
Guidelines.
Information and Publicity Officer: (Ref e$/QL/4/96)
With a relevant higher degree (in arts, or in
library, information, or computer science),
substantial experience of humanities computing,
excellent writing skills, and a proven facility with
web authoring, desktop publishing, and the design
and production of on-line and printed promotional
materials, you will be responsible for the Service's
information and publicity. You will also implement
networked systems developed on a Service-wide basis
(e.g. a comprehensive catalogue of AHDS resources,
integrated on-line data browsing facilities).
Accordingly, you will require a working knowledge of
library automation and cataloguing systems and of
relevant technical and cataloguing standards and
methods.
Appointment to the Development Officers posts will
be made on the academic-related grade 4 salary scale
currently 26,266-30,768 GBP inclusive of 2,134 GBP
per annum London Allowance. Appointment to the
Information and Publicity Officer will be made on
the academic related grade 3 salary scale currently
24,508-28,564 GBP inclusive of 2,134 GBP per annum
London Allowance.
