    This is an off-the cuff response to Fotis Jannidis inquiry about "text
    encoding"  and "text mark-up."  I'm not an expert in the literature, but I
    read around it a fair amount. If there is a clear distinction between the
    semantic spheres of encoding and mark-up it has escaped this particular
    reader. Perhaps there should be a difference, but I don't think there is a
    systematic and acknowledged difference in usage
