Digital technologies are changing the way in which cultural institutions
provide
access to their holdings, and the ways scholars can make their work
available to
a wider audience. This two-day interdisciplinary colloquium will focus on the
role of the World Wide Web in promoting, publicising and raising awareness of
cultural material. It will investigate the theoretical, practical, economic and
technical considerations of building and maintaining a cultural website.
The colloquium will provide delegates with an opportunity to hear lectures by
leading experts in the field including Peter Flynn, Lee Ellen Friedland, John
McDonough and George MacKenzie. In addition, seminars will provide delegates
with overviews to four areas critical to successful digitisation of archives:
text imaging, databases, and metainformation. On Friday afternoon delegates
will
work in small breakout groups to consider digital archive issues explored
in the
seminars, as well as issues of budgeting, archive scope, audience and planning.
