Digital Production Editor

Description:
Under the general direction of the Manager of Digital Publishing but
with minimal guidance and with considerable latitude for exercising
discretion and independent judgment, will carry out the following
responsibilities:

Manage workflow and content management for various new digital
projects and maintain schedules.

Determine optimal production strategy for individual titles and
develop Document Type Definitions for vendors to follow in digitizing
previously published work.

Arrange for or perform copyediting of original digital publications
and checking of vendor files on all digital publications.

Work closely with Acquisitions and Production Departments to ensure
that editing and production conform to each project?s publishing plan
and that projects stay on schedule.

Meet with authors or editors of complex publications to advise on
manuscript and illustration preparation for cost-efficient
publication. Coordinate closely with consultants and other editors of
digital documentary editions.

Investigate new production methods for electronic publications and
propose improvements to internal workflow on documentary editions
that are published both as books and as digital publications.

Qualifications

Preferred knowledge, skills, and abilities:

* Thorough experience with XML (from DTD and schema creation to
XSL/transform output)

* Ability to troubleshoot errors in XML files

* Experience with a content management system

* Familiarity with code pages, character sets, and/or encoding, and
with Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) guidelines

* Ability to learn new platforms and programs, especially databases
and spreadsheets, and ability to adapt them to new uses

* Experience working with a GUI XML editor, such as oXygen, Epic, or XMetal

* Quality assurance skills

* Experience with rendering output from XML source files

* Copyediting skills and knowledge of editorial norms, including
familiarity with Chicago Manual of Style

* Experience with Adobe Acrobat and Distiller, and HTML Help Workshop a plus

* Experience with outsourcing/off-shoring a plus

* Database Management System (DBMS) experience a plus

* Development/Scripting experience a plus (e.g., .NET, Java, PERL,
Python, etc.)

Special Licenses, Registration, or Certification:

None

Education or Training:

B.A. minimum. Programming experience a plus.

Level and Type of Experience:

Significant publishing experience a plus. Preferably three to five
years? relevant experience with an academic or reference publisher.
Familiarity with XML coding, TEI practices, and current and emerging
technologies for producing digital publications. Background in
humanities computing helpful.
