The Association for Documentary Editing (ADE) has extended the
application deadline to February 15th for Institute for the Editing of
Historical Documents (IEHD), which will be hosted at Princeton
University, June 16-20, 2019. Travel and housing stipends of up to $1200
available for qualifying admitted applicants.

The Association for Documentary Editing (ADE) is pleased to announce
the 48th Institute for the Editing of Historical Documents (IEHD) to be
held on the campus of Princeton University, June 16-20, 2019.

--Do you want to learn how to design, propose, and execute a high-impact
documentary editing project?

--Are you excited about an editorial project that you have begun to plan
or to put together, but are not sure how to proceed?

--Are you having difficulty identifying which of the many available
editorial methods, models, web and/or print platforms would be the most
effective for you and your specific project?

--If you recently began working for an established editorial project, or
are otherwise entering the field for the first time, are you interested
in learning about what it will take to become a successful editorial
project leader?

If any of these questions apply to you, we encourage you to apply to
this year's IEHD, where the full range of tasks and issues involved in
producing high-quality documentary editions will be addressed in an
intensive seminar under the guidance of skilled and experienced faculty
and alongside peers from a wide variety of fields and backgrounds. We
are especially interested in applicants who have already begun seriously
thinking about or planning new editorial projects, whether as standalone
works or as parts of larger undertakings. At the IEHD, we hope to
connect the next group of leaders and pioneers in the field of
documentary editing with the guidance, understanding, and resources they
will need to realize their goals.

No previous editorial or technical experience is required. We welcome
applications from individuals in any field who would benefit
from intensive training in the design and execution of a documentary
editing project.

The purpose of the IEHD is to provide not a narrow technical training
but the preparing of individuals to contribute to the field of
documentary editing, broadly conceived, over the course of their careers
by developing innovative, major projects and pursuing leadership roles.
To do those things, new or emerging editors will need a broad and varied
understanding of how editorial projects are designed, managed, and
maintained. The IEHD equips participants with such an understanding of
their work through a mix of topical discussions, such as sessions on
"Annotation Policies" or "Choosing a Digital Publishing Platform,"
frequent hands-on exercises, and close interaction with potential
mentors and advisors.

Through the sponsorship of the National Historical Publications and
Records Commission (NHPRC), an affiliate of the National Archives and
Records Administration (NARA), we are able to offer free admission to
the IEHD and to provide a $1200 stipend to qualifying participants to
defray the costs of attendance, including travel and housing. At this
year's location, a relatively affordable housing option will be made
available through Princeton University's campus housing, with more
information provided to admitted applicants before the deadline to
confirm attendance.

Participants in the IEHD will also receive a one-year membership to the
ADE and free registration for the ADE's 2019 Annual Meeting, which
immediately follows the institute in the same location. IEHD graduates
are encouraged to stay through the annual meeting, where they will have
the option to showcase their work to the general membership of the ADE
as part of the conference's opening poster session. Additional support
and instructions for the poster session will be provided during the
lead-up to the IEHD.

       More about Documentary Editing and the IEHD:

Documentary editing is the craft of preparing historical writings for
publication in print or online. The goal is to produce an authoritative
edition of the material, with an accurate transcription of the original
manuscript and an editorial framework that facilitates understanding of
the text and context.

The IEHD is an annual five-day workshop for individuals new to
historical documentary editing. Experienced documentary editors provide
instruction in the principles of their field and insight into the
realities of their work. Topics covered include the core tasks of
documentary editing -- collection and cataloging, selection and
digitization, transcription and encoding, annotation and
contextualization, proofreading and verification, organization and
layout, copyediting and indexing. Attention is also given to the related
concerns of planning and budgeting, funding and promotion, book
production and web design, teaching and curriculum development, outreach
and advocacy. The exact curriculum depends on the needs of the participants.
Participants in the IEHD might be joining the staff of an existing
documentary editing project or launching their own. Since its inception
in 1972, the IEHD has trained more than 500 individuals. These include
not only full-time documentary editors but also college and university
faculty and graduate students, archivists, librarians, government
historians, public historians, and independent scholars.

Admission to the Institute for the Editing of Historical Documents is
competitive: participation is normally limited to 18 people.
Participants are selected on the basis of their ability to benefit from
the training. Applications are welcomed from all newcomers to historical
documentary editing. Criteria for admission include the historical
importance of the applicant's project, its feasibility, institutional
and other financial support for it, progress on it to date, and the
applicant's potential to further it.

The Perseus Digital Library at Tufts University will host a two-day
workshop that provides an overview of a sample, practical digital
editions creation workflow. This will feature both an open-lecture
component led by developers and expert users of advanced technologies
and “hands-on” sessions for participants that offer in-depth
demonstrations of select tools and technologies as well as discussions
tailored to the attendees.
