Subject: Scholary Communications - A View from America

Willard,

Kathleen Fitzpatrick's April 2019 plenary address to the Coalition for
Networked Information is now available for viewing.

meetings/spring-2019/plenary-sessions-s19#opening

The talk approaches the future of academy-owned infrastructure, then,
through ways of thinking about sustainability beyond the technical, and
beyond the financial, focus on the social connections and commitments that
underwrite the work necessary to keep collective, not-for-profit forms of
scholarly infrastructure running.

It draws upon Against The Romance Of Community by Miranda Joseph as well
as Elinor Ostrom, economist, on the governance of common pool resources.

It would be interesting to observe in this era of globalism how the
American situation is different from (and the same as) conditions around
the world.

To paraphrase the colleague you cite often: watch it today.
