Dear Mark,

         You ask:

Subject: Re: [Humanist] 33.373: what is... (127)

[...] Could this mean that the digital humanities is a
transitional discipline, moving away from the humanities as we've know them
for 200 years and leading its practitioners to new and as yet unzoned forms
of knowledge?

In my opinion Digital Humanities still have a lot to do *for* and *in*
the Humanities. As many scholars engaged in this field have already
observed - Franco Moretti for one - the Digital Humanities can be
thought of as a *meta-discipline* for, as I see it, it comprises two
components, an operational one, that consists in the application of
computational methods to distinct humanities domains, as well as
a theoretical one, that consists in a "critical" (to quote Willard McCarty)
or, more specifically, an epistemological reflection on the adequacy
of such methods to achieve relevant results.

In my Department of Philosophy the professor in the Philosophy of
Science was giving epistemology courses in the faculties of the hard
sciences. So much for the trend to dispose of the Humanities in
higher education.
