Well, it all hinges on how you define “interdisciplinary.” For the SNSF, research is interdisciplinary when “[a] similar degree of importance is attached to all the disciplines involved.” Proposals that involve “only one discipline or one main discipline supported by auxiliary disciplines” are eligible for regular project funding. The effect of this regulation on DH is clearly visible in the project database (http://p3.snf.ch): practically all projects with the keyword “digital humanities” are in a traditional humanities discipline, and the “digital” comes in the form of supporting tools or methods (± what I call applied DH). However, research on methods and meta-models (what I call theoretical DH) isn’t possible in such a setting, as the research question is neither mostly in the humanities nor mostly in computer science.
