Humanist Discussion Group, Vol. 33, No. 516. Department of Digital Humanities, King's College London Hosted by King's Digital Lab www.dhhumanist.org Submit to: humanist@dhhumanist.org Date: 2019-12-22 10:00:14+00:00 From: Jan RybickiSubject: Re: [Humanist] 33.495: John F. Burrows (1928-2019) This is sad news indeed. And to think I had the honour to finally meet John in person only TWO WEEKS ago in Newcastle! He was not very frail at all, and extremely lucid, and I wish I have half of his memory and wit when I'm anywhere close to his age. He gave a funny and self-deprecating short survey of stylometry at Newcastle to the Digital Research Across the Humanities 2019 symposium. Then we talked. At the end of our conversation, he said, "Well, Jan, we'll probably not meet again". I, of course, disagreed, not out of politeness: I was absolutely certain I'll make it back Down Under before he goes... Once more, like in stylometry, John Burrows was right - sadly, this time. We usually say that, but it is 100% true in his case: his work lives on. My heart goes out to his family, friends and collaborators.
